Yet the ULTRA secret - the Allied 'breaking' of the German 'Enigma' code was only part of a much wider story. In both world wars, radio was a primary means of communication - and searching for enemy radio traffic became top priority. Using radio intercepts enabled the Germans to inflict devastating losses on the Russians in 1914; mis-using radio intercepts saw the Royal Navy fail to catch the German fleet. Radio warfare played a critical role during the Battle of Britain and the battle of the Atlantic: regardless of what a U-boat transmitted, the British developed the technology to catch them the moment they began to broadcast. From 1914 to the great campaigns of World War II, radio intercepts shaped the course of history.

Film director John Ford’s The Searchers defined the spirit of America, influenced a generation of filmmakers, and was named the Greatest Western Movie of All Time by the American Film Institute. Now, experience the original story—a timeless work of vivid, raw western fiction and a no-holds-barred portrait of the American frontier. From the moment they left their homestead unguarded on that scorching Texas day, Martin Pauley and Amos Edwards became searchers. First, they had to return to the decimated ranch, bury the bodies of their family, and confront the evil cunning of the Comanche who had slaughtered them.
Then the pair set out in pursuit of missing Debbie Edwards. In the years that followed, Pauley and Edwards would endure storms of nature and of men, both of them seeking more than a missing girl—and more than revenge. Driven by secrets, guilt, love, and rage, and defying the dangers all around them, the two men would become a frontier legend, searching for the one moment. The one last battle. That will finally set them free. In this “drama of stubborn courage. To which the prose lends a matching stature,” Alan LeMay crafted one of the most enduring western tales ever—and inspired a work of cinematic genius that still stands to this day (Kirkus Reviews).

In 1836 in East Texas, nine-year-old Cynthia Ann Parker was kidnapped by Comanches. She was raised by the tribe and eventually became the wife of a warrior. Twenty-four years after her capture, she was reclaimed by the U.S. Cavalry and Texas Rangers and restored to her white family, to die in misery and obscurity.
Cynthia Ann's story has been told and re-told over generations to become a foundational American tale. The myth gave rise to operas and one-act plays, and in the 1950s to a novel by Alan LeMay, which would be adapted into one of Hollywood's most legendary films, The Searchers, 'The Biggest, Roughest, Toughest. And Most Beautiful Picture Ever Made!' Directed by John Ford and starring John Wayne.
Glenn Frankel, beginning in Hollywood and then returning to the origins of the story, creates a rich and nuanced anatomy of a timeless film and a quintessentially American myth. The dominant story that has emerged departs dramatically from documented history: it is of the inevitable triumph of white civilization, underpinned by anxiety about the sullying of white women by 'savages.'
What makes John Ford's film so powerful, and so important, Frankel argues, is that it both upholds that myth and undermines it, baring the ambiguities surrounding race, sexuality, and violence in the settling of the West and the making of America. The authors provide fresh perspectives on landmark films such Stagecoach, Red River, The Searchers, The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, and The Wild Bunch, and they also pay tribute to many underappreciated Westerns including 3 Bad Men, The Wind, The Big Trail, Ruggles of Red Gap, Northwest Passage, The Westerner, The Furies, Jubal, and Comanche Station. The book explores major phases of the Western's development-silent era oaters, A-production classics of the 1930s and early 1940s, and the more psychologically complex presentations of the Westerner that emerged in the post-World War II period.
They examine various forms of genre-revival and genre-revisionism that have recurred over the past half-century, culminating especially in the masterworks of Clint Eastwood. Central themes of the book include the inner life of the Western hero, the importance of the natural landscape, the tension between myth and history, the depiction of the Native American, and the juxtaposing of comedy and tragedy'-Provided by publisher.

I had trouble at first with the sound effects as background noise and found that a bit distracting but after a while I got used to it, and overall I enjoyed the story in this format. One person found this helpful. If that seems a bit pat, the conceit is rescued by Alan Le May’s execution. The Comanche in the novel are people; just people that Le May and his characters don’t like. The depth of Amos’s hatred is wonderfully demonstrated by his thoroughgoing knowledge of his enemy). Le May’s grasp of the material extends beyond Indian lore, to include frontier architecture, the finer arts of tracking, and a lot about horsesAuthor: Alan Le May.

These people had a kind of courage that may be the finest gift of man: the courage of those who simply keep on and on, doing the next thing, far beyond all reasonable endurance, seldom thinking of themselves as martyred, and never thinking of themselves as brave. It explores the fear and the hatred that underpinned the lives of both the white settlers and the Native Americans. John Ford's 1956 film, based on the novel, starred John Wayne as Ethan Edwards (called Amos in the book and radio adaptation). 'The Searchers' qualifies as a western classic.
Mind you, the John Ford film with John Wayne sticks closely to Alan LeMay's novel, but it differs in some major ways. Back to why you should read 'The Searchers.' First, if you love westerns, especially oaters with lifestyle lore, you'll crave this western with its lore on Comanche Indians. LeMay piles on the background like Louis L'Amour did in his westerns. This is not the mark of a tenderfoot.
Second, this ranks as memorable literature, with evocative prose. LeMay knows when to end a chapter for maximum impact. The characters are interesting; the surprises are shocking, and the depiction of Indians here may give liberal-minded readers pause. In every sense of the phrase 'are the only good Indians, dead Indians. The history about the Indians and the Quaker Peace Keepers is complicated and fascinating at the same time. I thoroughly enjoyed this frontier saga! After reading Alan LeMay's, The Unforgiven, I had to read his previous book, The Searchers.
He writes of the Southwest, specifically Texas and New Mexico, about five years after The War Between the States. Martin Pauley is an orphan being raised by the Edwards family. His own family was slaughtered by Comanche Indians.
While he and an Edwards uncle are out searching for missing cattle, the Edwards family is slaughtered by Comanches. The youngest daughter, Debbie, is captured by the indians. Thus begins the search by Amos Edward and Mart Pauley which encompasses six years, many hardships, disappointments, and frustrations.
The ending is better than the movie's (although I liked the movie). The dialogue is spot on and LeMay's knowledge of horses, homesteading, and ranch life is excellent. This is in the late 1860's and Texas, having recently lost in the Confederate cause is being neglected by the federal government. Indians are on the rampage with many massacres.
It is in this atmosphere that The Searchers takes place. Indian life is not sentimentilized. Neither is the life and prejudices of the white settlers. The book is very evenhanded.I couldn't put the book down. I am glad I found it and recommend it to readers who like a good Western yarn. LeMay wrote wonderful stories, whether novels, short stories or movie screenplays. I've owned a hardcover version of 'The Searchers' for over 30 years.I'm trying to replace all of my favorite books in eformat, as well as getting as many books by my favorite authors in eformat.
I was thrilled today to find 7 ebooks by Mr. LeMay.The novels:The SearchersThe UnforgivenThe Smoky YearsWinter Rangeand 3 books featuring short stories:Spanish CrossingThe Bells Of San JuanWest Of Nowhere.I would give them all 5 stars - except I can only change the font on 'The Searchers'. The other books have a serif font that looks like Times New Roman, and is very hard for me to read.
I have a lot of vision problems, and a sans serif font, like Arial or Helvetica is much easier for me to see. I have Helvetica set as the permanent font on my Kindle Fire and the Kindle app on my phone. Also, per Mr. LeMay's entry on Wikipedia, there are 2 more short story collections, 'Painted Rock' and 'Tonopah Range' which are not available in eformat, even though they were published in 2004 & 2006, respectively. To the publisher: Whyever not? I'm not buying hardcover or paperback books anymore. I don't have the room. Plus eformat books are generally less expensive, which means I can afford to buy more books.
An excellent book! If you think it is just like the movie; you will be surprised. The movie is based on the story, but after the first three chapters, the movie quickly resolves the issues at hand with conclusions that are quite unlike the book. The book does not end like the movie!
The book is far richer in context, and keeps one engrossed in the story with a great deal of material that is not in the movie. This book is seemingly based upon a vast knowledge of actual historical references of the 'Wild West' that makes the reading fascinating. It would make a very good mini-series like 'Lonesome Dove'; far superior to the John Wayne 'quickie' movie version.though the Wayne movie is also good to watch; it is just different. The resolutions are pretty much complete, but I kinda wish the author had been able to continue the story with a sequel. The surviving characters were well developed, and could easily have been expanded upon in another story.
